One of the most widely discussed issues in the Bible is money. Money and the search for it can either rule your life or you can control the need for money and rule how you personally achieve financial stability. It is imperative that one understands how God views money to ward off the temptation of allowing the pursuit of money to become a focal point in your life. Money is simply the means to an end. It is intended to be used to transact business. If one uses money wisely it can be an aid to a person or family’s well-being as well as a method of living your priorities with God as the center of your concerns.

Money is a tool to be used to garner the things we need to survive. Food, shelter, clothes are all items that we can procure through the use of money. Money is neither good nor evil. It is how we use money that matters in the Christian point of view. If we view money as a means to an end, it eliminates the search for wealth in and of itself. Thus we avoid idolizing money and simply use it as a tool.

From the Christian perspective, it is vital that we all live below our means to avoid falling into financial and spiritual traps. There is a real, discernible difference between needs and wants. To be able to delineate along these lines is a constant struggle for the Christian money manager. A car is a great example. We all need transportation in today’s world to work, to play, to visit family and to go to church. However, we do not need a brand new automobile with GPS and every other fancy accoutrement. Perhaps to avoid debt, it is better to purchase a car with which you can pay cash. This may mean your car is an older model but it eliminates unneeded debt.

If our aim is to serve God and not money, then we must invest wisely and allow our money to grow slowly and regularly. It is important that we all save as we do not know our hour of need. Showing our faith as Christians requires that we also share our wealth through stewardship and giving to charity. The Bible tells of many instances where a wise man husbanded his wealth to provide for others. This is the true reflection of a Christian regarding financial issues.

Although this is a topic that has been discussed and studied for decades, Dave Ramsey has really brought this concept based approach to money management into the forefront of American society. His books, Financial Peace Planner, The Total Money Makeover, The Money Answerbook, More Than Enough, have all been best sellers. His Audio CD’s “High Performance Achievement” and “ EntreLeadership” are both popular in Christian bookstores all over the country. His radio show broadcasts are rated at the top of his genre. Why is he so popular?

The message is simple: apply conservative Christian principles to all money related matters. This message resonates particularly well in the difficult economic conditions we all face now. He clearly states in an easy to understand manner, a basic blueprint on how to mange your household budget. He provides a step by step plan to reach stated goals. The method is simply a combination of conservative common sense and a restatement of the basic principle: buy what you need- not what you want! He advocates both husband and wife take an active role in establishing financial goals and then outlining a viable plan to achieve these goals.

The Christian philosophy he espouses colors all decision making processes. When determining household goals, Ramsey believes this must be a collective decision made by both husband and wife that mirrors one’s values. He is adamant that God must be a factor in your day to day decisions. For many people, bringing their religious beliefs into their daily lives is a wonderful testament to their faith.

Generally, when someone has a good or popular idea or slant on our daily lives, others tend to copy it. In Dave Ramsey’s case, there are many companies, groups and individuals that have emulated Ramsey’s success. There are now whole sections of book stores devoted to Christian Money Management. Obviously, this message resonates with a large portion of American society.

If you search the internet, you can now find Christian Money Managers advertising not only their expertise in financial money management, but also advertising their Christian faith as well. Christian Financial Planners are delving into debt consolidation, debt management, providing financial advice and securing your future through a Christian perspective.

In an era when integrity and purpose are sometimes wanting, this field provides a great service to many people looking for solutions- both financial solutions and answers about matters out of this world-literally.
